Dead at 85, Betty Friedan gets credit as the explosive force that finally told the truth about women’s lack of opportunity in the world and in the workplace, dated back from way beyond the 50s.
It’s certainly a mark of how full the circle has come when I hear a 50-something man remarking to another man of similar age that he’s lost his job because of women. That his male friend told him when he asked him to give him a job, I just can’t hire you Joe, when I can get a woman who’ll work twice as hard for half as much money.
Thanks, Betty. Even if women haven’t yet achieved pay equity across industries, they now have opportunities their mothers and grandmothers weren’t even allowed to dream about.
